News Capsule: Black Matpe (Urad) Market Scenario: South Asia Agri Forum Summit 2026
★ During discussions at the South Asia Agri Forum Summit 2026, the international outlook for black matpe (urad) was highlighted. Myanmar is currently holding old stocks of around 1–1.5 lakh tons, while the new crop is expected to be similar to last year at about 8-8.50 lakh tons, indicating comfortable overall availability.
★ However, India’s kharif urad crop is estimated to be short. India has already imported around 8 tonnes of urad from Myanmar, while domestic production is expected at about 23 lakh tons. Last year, a steady supply from Myanmar was seen, averaging nearly 35,000 tonnes per month.
★ Going forward, despite continued supplies from Myanmar, demand from India is expected to remain strong due to the short domestic crop.
★ Panelists noted that Myanmar (Burma) may raise prices in response to Indian demand, and as a result, urad prices in India could improve in the coming months.
