News Capsule: Cotton imports likely to rise: ICAC
★ According to the International Cotton Advisory Committee (ICAC), India’s production of Extra-Long and Long Staple cotton is estimated to increase from 100,000 tonnes in 2023-24 to 110,000 tonnes in 2024-25. However, imports are projected to surge sharply from 90,000 tonnes to 265,000 tonnes.
★ India’s cotton year runs from October to September, but ICAC releases its estimates based on the global August–July cycle.
In 2024-25, India’s consumption of these varieties is expected to rise from 95,000 tonnes to 150,000 tonnes, while imports are likely to grow by nearly 200%. The report notes a significant increase in India’s import and consumption patterns.
★ In February 2024, the Indian government removed import duties on cotton longer than 32 mm. India mainly imports Extra-Long and Long Staple cotton from Egypt and the US. In August, the government also waived import duties on all raw cotton until December.
★ India also exports these premium cotton varieties, with exports expected to rise from 155,000 tonnes in 2023-24 to 187,000 tonnes in 2024-25. According to the report, India’s imports and exports may differ in quality and variety.
