News Capsule: Excess rain impact on kharif output minor: Crisil
★ Rating agency Crisil has said that although excessive monsoon rains this year affected paddy and pulses crops in several major kharif-growing states, the overall impact on India’s total kharif output is expected to be minimal.
★ According to Crisil, if there are no further adverse weather events and the rabi season remains normal, India could witness its third consecutive successful harvest.
★ The report noted that 10 states — Punjab, Rajasthan, Telangana, Haryana, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, West Bengal, Odisha, and Madhya Pradesh — faced crop damage due to excess rainfall. These states together account for about 58% of India’s total kharif area.
★ October is an important month, as kharif crops are in the final stage of harvesting and the soil needs to release moisture to prepare for rabi sowing.
★ During the June–September monsoon season, the country received 108% of the long-period average rainfall, with 91% of the geographical area reporting normal to above-normal rains. This marks the second consecutive year of ‘above-normal’ monsoon, after below-normal rainfall in 2023.
★ The Agriculture Ministry has recently projected a modest 2.4% rise in foodgrain production for the 2025–26 crop year (July–June), estimating output at 362.5 million tonnes, up from 353 million tonnes in 2024–25.
