News Capsule: First Advance Estimates of Sugar Production 2025-26: ISMA
★ For the 2025-26 sugar season, India’s sugarcane area is estimated at around 57.35 lakh hectares, a slight increase from 57.11 lakh hectares last year.
★ In Maharashtra, cane area has risen to 14.71 lakh hectares (13.82 lakh hectares last year), with good crop conditions and adequate water. Gross sugar production is projected at 130 lakh tonnes, up 39% from 93.51 lakh tonnes last year.
★ Karnataka’s cane area is estimated at 6.8 lakh hectares (6.4 lakh hectares last year). Favourable weather and water availability are expected to boost production to around 63.5 lakh tonnes, a 16% increase.
★ In Uttar Pradesh, cane area is slightly lower at 22.57 lakh hectares (23.30 lakh hectares last year), but improved crop conditions may raise production to 103.2 lakh tonnes from 101.01 lakh tonnes last year.
★ Minor changes are expected in other states. Total sugar production is estimated at 343.5 lakh tonnes (296.1 lakh tonnes last season), of which 34 lakh tonnes may go for ethanol (35 lakh tonnes last season).
★ After ethanol diversion, net sugar production could reach 309.5 lakh tonnes, up from 261 lakh tonnes last season, an increase of 48.5 lakh tonnes. Exports are not included, as the government has not yet announced any policy.
