News Capsule: Global Pulses Market
Pea Market Remains Under Pressure
★ International field pea markets continue to face pressure due to uncertainty surrounding demand from China and India.
India’s recent import duty notification did little to improve the situation. Some traders believed India had changed the actual import duties on pulses, while others realized it was merely a consolidation and update of older customs notifications with no change in effective rates.
★ Global carryover stocks of peas are expected to rise significantly this season, adding to the market’s bearish sentiment.

Uncertainty in Lentil Market Amid Data Deficit
★ Global lentil markets closed the week on a mixed note. Green lentil prices remained steady to slightly weaker, while red lentils showed mild firmness.
★ Supply of red lentils appears more balanced with expected demand, but green lentils remain in oversupply due to expanded acreage and higher yields in both Canada and the United States.

Quality-Based Price Spread Widens in Kabuli Chickpeas
★ Global kabuli chickpea markets remained mostly steady during the week. Prices for large-size (10 mm and above) chickpeas were stable, while smaller calibers showed a softer trend.
★ Smaller chickpea varieties are under pressure from increased production in North America. In the United States, grower bids have dropped sharply since the start of the marketing year.
★ In Canada, small-size chickpea prices are also trending lower, though at a slower pace. In contrast, prices for good-quality, large-size chickpeas have strengthened, benefiting growers in those regions.
