News Capsule: Harvest slowed in Australia due to rain
★ Last week, storms and rainfall in northern New South Wales and southern Queensland had mixed impacts on the weather and crops. In the eastern Darling Downs, hail severely damaged some crops.
★ In Queensland, the barley harvest is almost complete. Chickpea yields are 0.5–1 ton/ha lower compared to last year, while wheat and barley yields are normal. Farmers are now focusing on summer crops, particularly sorghum and mungbean planting.
★ Mungbean prices are around $1300/ton, while chickpeas are approximately $560/ton.
★ In northern NSW, wheat and chickpea harvesting is still ongoing. In areas like Walgett and Moree, yields have been good, although protein levels are lower than expected.
★ Overall, rainfall has slowed harvesting in some regions but created good prospects for the summer crops.
