News Capsule: India refuses Myanmar’s proposal to open imports of moong and maize
★ India has rejected Myanmar’s proposal to increase imports of moong and maize, citing sufficient domestic production of both crops. The government has clarified that the existing trade agreement will continue to cover only urad and tur.
★ Last week, a ministerial delegation from Myanmar met Indian officials and proposed to include moong and maize in the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) governing urad and tur trade. However, India declined the proposal.
★ Under the existing five-year MoU (2021-22 to 2025-26), India allows annual imports of 2.5 lakh tonnes of urad and 1 lakh tonnes of tur from Myanmar. Actual import volumes, however, have often exceeded these limits. Imports of urad and tur have been placed under the “free category” since May 2021, and this policy has now been extended till March 31, 2026.
