News Capsule: India – Soybean Oil Import Deals Delayed
★ India’s imports of Argentine soybean oil have slowed as rising domestic availability and a weaker rupee make overseas supplies costlier. More than 100,000 tonnes of Argentine soy oil shipments have been cancelled or deferred to the next month, accounting for nearly 20% of India’s average monthly soy oil imports.
★ Domestic soy oil prices in India are currently trading $40–50 per tonne below South American offers, making imports uneconomical. At the same time, Argentina’s increased soybean supplies to China have tightened its own oil availability and pushed prices higher, further reducing competitiveness for Indian buyers.
★ Meanwhile, India is receiving limited but cheaper soybean oil shipments from China, priced around $10–15 per tonne below South American supplies. With weak demand and higher arrivals from the new local crop, near-term pressure on soy oil imports is likely to persist. A sustained drop in imports could eventually support domestic soybean prices.
