News Capsule: India’s palm oil imports fall to five-month low in October
★ India’s palm oil imports dropped 27.6% in October to 600,000 tonnes, the lowest since May. For the 2024-25 marketing year, imports fell 16% to 7.56 million tonnes — the lowest in five years.
★ A rally in palm oil prices prompted buyers to shift towards soyoil. Soyoil imports also fell 17.1% in October to 417,000 tonnes, though full-year imports surged 61.6% to a record 5.56 million tonnes.
★ Sunflower oil imports declined 6.4% in October to 255,000 tonnes, bringing total imports for the year down 17.7% to 2.88 million tonnes.
★ Overall edible oil imports in October fell 20.7% to 1.27 million tonnes, while total edible oil imports for 2024-25 rose marginally by 0.3% to 16 million tonnes.
★ With lower imports, edible oil prices in India are expected to rise in the coming weeks.
