News Capsule: India’s Sugar Production Sees Sharp Rise: ISMA
★ During the ongoing 2025–26 sugar season (October–September), India’s sugar production rose by 18.35 per cent to 19.5 million tonnes as of January 31. In the same period last season, production stood at 16.47 million tonnes.
★ According to the Indian Sugar & Bio-energy Manufacturers Association (ISMA), 515 sugar mills are currently operational across the country, compared with 501 mills operating during the same period last year.
★ State-wise data shows that sugar production in Maharashtra increased by 42 per cent to 7.87 million tonnes. At present, 206 mills are operating in the state, compared with 190 mills last year.
★ In Uttar Pradesh, sugar output reached 5.51 million tonnes, about 5 per cent higher than last year, supported by steady crushing operations.
★ Karnataka also reported improved crushing conditions, with sugar production rising by around 15 per cent compared with the corresponding period of the previous season.
★ ISMA has projected net sugar production for the entire 2025–26 season at 30.95 million tonnes, up about 18.6 per cent from 26.1 million tonnes in the previous season.
