News Capsule: International Markets: Mixed Trends in Peas, Lentils and Chickpeas
Peas
★ Global pea markets ended the week on a slightly firmer note. Prices found support from expectations of stronger participation by net exporting countries to meet demand through the rest of the year. However, sentiment in Canada turned somewhat cautious amid renewed tariff concerns from the United States. This has also raised uncertainty over the preliminary trade understanding between Canada and China.

Lentils
★ Lentil markets remained mostly steady to marginally firm during the week, though overall trading activity was light. Export prices for green lentils were largely unchanged, while red lentils recorded small gains. Demand prospects from India remain uncertain. During the current rabi season, lentil acreage in India is estimated at a record 1.812 million hectares, higher than both last year and the long-term average.

Kabuli Chickpeas
★ Chickpea markets continue to face pressure. Internationally, both desi and kabuli chickpea stocks are expected to rise during the 2025–26 marketing season. Combined residual stocks could increase to around 1.68 million tonnes, significantly higher than last season. This surplus is likely to keep chickpea prices under pressure in the near term.
