News Capsule: Lentil Market Outlook: South Asia Agri Forum Summit 2026
During the South Asia Agri Forum Summit 2026, panelists indicated that lentil production is expected to be lower in the coming season. Despite this, the panel believes there is a low likelihood of any import duty being imposed on lentils.
In Canada, farmers are holding stocks of red lentils, while green lentils are being sold more actively due to better demand and pricing. In the international market, green lentil prices have fallen sharply from around $1,400 per tonne to nearly $700 per tonne.
Bangladesh has imported about 450,000 tonnes of lentils from Canada and around 250,000 tonnes from Turkey. With prices showing limited volatility, any change in import policy is considered unlikely.
According to the panel, the market is expected to trade in a relatively stable range. A price gap of about $30–45 per tonne exists between container and bulk cargo. As most shipments are currently arriving in bulk, traders are advised to focus more on bulk vessel prices.
