News Capsule: Low rainfall and rising temperatures may impact rabi crops: India Meteorological Department
★ According to the IMD, maximum and minimum temperatures across most parts of the country are likely to remain above normal in February 2026, while rainfall in northwest India may be below average. This could adversely affect standing rabi crops.
★ The weather department said higher temperatures may lead to early maturity in crops such as wheat and barley, resulting in lighter grains and lower yields. Pulses and oilseeds may also face early flowering and weak grain filling, which can negatively impact overall production.
★ The IMD added that El Niño conditions are expected to remain neutral till July 2026. A clearer picture on the 2026 monsoon is likely to emerge only after April.
