News Capsule: Lower Imports, Weak Crop and Limited Arrivals Signal Further Strength in Tur Prices
★ The tur (pigeon pea) market is currently witnessing a firm undertone. By mid-January 2026, prices in major mandis across the country are trading above their December averages, strengthening expectations of further upside in the market.

Prices
★ Tur prices have shown a steady improvement between November and January. In key markets such as Solapur, Latur, Akola and Mumbai, prices are up by ₹400–700 per quintal compared with the December average. When compared to September 2025, December prices were higher by ₹950–1,150 per quintal, reflecting strong demand amid limited availability.

Imports
★ The import front continues to provide support to the market. During April–October 2025, tur imports are estimated at around 0.936 million tonnes, lower than 1.0 million tonnes imported during the same period last year. This indicates reduced imports in the current season. For reference, total tur imports in the previous financial year stood at 1.223 million tonnes.

Crop Situation
★ Domestic production of tur this year is estimated at around 2.8 million tonnes. However, crop conditions are not considered favorable and quality is also reported to be below average. Moreover, the absence of heavy arrival pressure in mandis suggests that actual production may be lower than current estimates.
★ According to market sources, weak domestic output combined with lower imports could lead to an increase in imports in the coming months. Rising demand in the international market may also prompt exporters to raise prices, which would have a direct impact on domestic markets.

Future
★ Overall, factors such as limited supply, a weak crop, reduced imports and thin arrivals indicate strong fundamentals for the tur market. Prices are therefore expected to remain firm, with further improvement likely in the coming period.
