News Capsule: MSP Procurement of Tur Begins in Telangana
★ With market prices ruling below the Minimum Support Price (MSP), the Telangana government has decided to intervene and start MSP procurement of tur (red gram) from the kharif season through the State Markfed.
★ Total tur production in Telangana this season is estimated at around 0.3 million tonnes, with acreage of about 0.202 million hectares. The MSP for tur has been fixed at ₹8,000 per quintal, while farmers are currently getting around ₹7,200 per quintal in the open market. During the harvest period (January–February 2026), prices are expected to remain in the range of ₹6,900–7,200 per quintal.
★ After receiving approval from the central government, the state will procure up to 0.171 million tonnes of tur. MSP operations will continue until March 26. Out of 82 proposed procurement centres, 13 are currently operational, and so far 30.25 tonnes have been procured from 32 farmers.
★ MSP procurement is also underway in other states, which could provide support to tur prices in the coming weeks.
