News Capsule: Mustard Production Expected to Rise
★ India’s mustard production in 2025–26 is expected to increase by around 10%, supported by higher acreage and favourable weather conditions so far. Sowing has risen by 3.2% to 89.36 lakh hectares. Last year, mustard output stood at 126.67 lakh tonnes, while the government has set a production target of 139 lakh tonnes for the current season.
★ Acreage has increased in major producing states such as Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. However, there are some concerns over possible rain and hailstorms in north-west India in the coming days. According to the India Meteorological Department, a western disturbance may bring strong winds along with light to moderate rainfall in some regions.
★ Overall crop conditions remain good, with no reports of frost, which is a positive sign for yields. In contrast, mustard sowing has declined in north-eastern states, particularly in Assam and Jharkhand.
