News Capsule: Palm oil imports rise in January, soyoil and sunflower oil decline
★ India’s palm oil imports rose to a four-month high in January as refiners increased purchases of cheaper palm oil in place of soyoil. Palm oil imports jumped 51 percent to around 766,000 tonnes in January, compared with 507,000 tonnes in December.
★ In contrast, soyoil imports fell 45 percent to about 280,000 tonnes, the lowest level in the past 19 months. Sunflower oil imports also declined by 23 percent to nearly 269,000 tonnes.
★ Overall, India’s total edible oil imports in January dropped 3.5 percent month-on-month to around 1.32 million tonnes. These figures do not include duty-free shipments arriving via land routes from Nepal.
★ Palm oil imports are expected to remain strong in February as well, while pressure on soyoil and sunflower oil imports is likely to continue. The decline in soyoil and sunflower oil imports is expected to support prices in the domestic market.
