News Capsule: Red chilli prices in India have turned sharply higher, validating the recent outlook released by I-Grain India.
★ Prices have strengthened due to a decline in cultivated area, pest attacks such as thrips and wilt, and rising demand from international markets. As a result, prices in the Telangana market yards of Warangal and Khammam have moved up significantly.
★ Last week, chilli prices touched as high as Teja ₹21,100 per quintal, while current market rates are ruling in the range of ₹16,000 to ₹18,500 per quintal, the highest levels seen in the last three years.
★ The area under chilli cultivation has been steadily declining, and production this year is estimated at around 5.39 lakh tonnes, compared with 6.62 lakh tonnes last year. Quality issues in early arrivals due to excess moisture have led to mixed market sentiment.
★ In Andhra Pradesh as well, chilli acreage has fallen sharply. Supported by lower production and strong demand, prices are expected to remain firm during the current season.
