News Capsule: Rice Import Agreement
★ Mauritius is preparing to enter into long-term agreements with India for the import of around 33,000 tonnes of rice.
★ After India imposed a ban on non-basmati rice exports in 2023 to stabilize its domestic market, Pakistan captured a significant share of the Mauritian rice market. Before the ban, most of the rice was supplied by India through long-term contracts. However, after the ban, the Mauritian government introduced an open tender process, during which Pakistan took advantage of the situation.
★ Now that India has lifted the export ban, Mauritius aims to restore its earlier long-term supply arrangements with India.
Mauritius requires about 1,000 tonnes of basmati rice and 32,000 tonnes of non-basmati white rice annually.
