News Capsule: Soymeal WASDE Report: India Faces Lower Output, Higher Imports
★According to the USDA February WASDE report, India’s soymeal outlook for the 2025–26 season presents a mixed scenario, with lower production and exports, while imports are projected to rise.
★ Beginning stocks for 2025–26 are estimated at 2.5 lakh tonnes, slightly higher than 2.2 lakh tonnes in 2024–25.
★Production is projected to decline sharply to 74.2 lakh tonnes, compared to 88 lakh tonnes last season — a drop of 13.8 lakh tonnes. This reduction could tighten domestic supply.
★Imports are expected to increase to 2.5 lakh tonnes, up significantly from just 0.1 lakh tonnes last year, indicating that India may rely more on imports to offset lower domestic output.
★Domestic consumption is estimated at 68.8 lakh tonnes, slightly lower than 70 lakh tonnes in the previous year.
★Exports are projected to fall substantially to 8.5 lakh tonnes, down from 17.8 lakh tonnes — a decline of 9.3 lakh tonnes.
★Ending stocks are estimated at 2 lakh tonnes, compared to 2.5 lakh tonnes last season.
★Overall, the report suggests that India’s soymeal market may remain under pressure due to lower production and weaker exports, while higher imports could help balance domestic demand.
