New Delhi. Thanks to good sowing of chickpeas, the total area under Rabi pulses has increased by 1.70 lakh hectares compared to last year, but the area under lentils remains stable, while the sowing of other pulses is lagging behind last year's figures.

This includes peas, horse gram, khesari, black gram, and green gram. Black gram and green gram are also cultivated during the Kharif and Zaid seasons.

According to official data, the total area under pulse crops in the current Rabi season has reached 117.11 lakh hectares, which is 1.70 lakh hectares more than the 115.41 lakh hectares sown during the same period last season.

Under this, the area under chickpeas increased by 3.24 lakh hectares from 81.67 lakh hectares to 84.91 lakh hectares, while the area under lentils decreased by 5,000 hectares from 14.57 lakh hectares to 7.92 lakh hectares.

The area under horse gram slipped from 1.69 lakh hectares to 1.59 lakh hectares, the area under black gram fell from 3.09 lakh hectares to 2.41 lakh hectares, and the area under green gram decreased from 37,000 hectares to 32,000 hectares.

Furthermore, the sowing of other Rabi pulse crops also decreased from 3.06 lakh hectares last year to 2.84 lakh hectares this year.

The sowing of pulse crops has reached its final stage, so the pace is likely to slow down further. Although the government has significantly increased the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for chickpeas and lentils, which has kept the area under these crops at a satisfactory level so far,

there is a possibility that the sowing of Rabi pulse crops will be affected in some areas due to farmers giving special priority to the cultivation of wheat, maize, barley, and mustard. Heavy imports of cheap chickpeas, lentils, and black gram from abroad are also continuing.
