Normal or surplus rain in 82 percent of the country

New Delhi. Heavy rains are occurring in many states of the country due to increased activity and mobility of the southwest monsoon during the current month.

According to the Meteorological Department, during June 1 to August 7, 107 percent rainfall was recorded at the national level as compared to the long period average (APA), while 44 percent surplus rainfall was recorded in the first week of August.

With this, by August 7, 2024, 82 percent of the geographical area of ​​the country received normal or above normal monsoon rainfall.

This is helping the farmers in sowing Kharif crops, while at some places the problem of flood and water logging has also arisen.

According to the Meteorological Department, during August 1-7, 92.1 mm rainfall was recorded in the country, which was about 44 percent more than the normal average level of 63.8 mm. During this period,

the northwestern part of the country - Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir recorded 84.2 mm of rainfall which was much more than the normal average of 50 mm.

Similarly, the eastern and northeastern states of the country received heavy rainfall of 119.6 mm as against the long-term average of 73.3 mm.

This division includes West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand and the states of the eastern region. The central division of the country includes Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Orissa and Goa.

During the first 7 days of August, this division includes Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Orissa and Goa. During the first 7 days of August, this division received 109.4 mm of rainfall which was 33 percent more than the normal average rainfall of 82.1 mm.

South India also received abundant rainfall during the period under review, which includes states like Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

There was 52.3 mm rainfall in the first seven days which was 12 percent more than the normal average of 46.7 mm.

The monsoon rains are still continuing and the Meteorological Department has issued different rain alerts in many states of the country. There are also reports of damage to Kharif crops due to excess and floods in some areas.
