Thiruvananthapuram. The Northeast Monsoon has already arrived, and its influence is causing heavy rainfall in the southern states of the country. Its activity is expected to accelerate significantly from next week, leading to heavy rainfall in the southern peninsula as well as the western states and central India.
A rain-bearing depression formed over the southeastern Arabian Sea on October 22nd and persisted until October 23rd. Its path has gradually shifted away from Karnataka and Goa and toward Mumbai and Konkan.
Another low-pressure area formed over the southwest Bay of Bengal, but it did not intensify significantly or develop into a depression.
Its flow later shifted toward southern interior Karnataka and adjacent northern Kerala. It may advance into the Arabian Sea and consolidate with the existing depression there.
In the other part of the southern peninsula, activity is intensifying over the Bay of Bengal. A cyclonic circulation has formed there, which could become a low-pressure area by October 24th.
It could advance and reach the Tamil Nadu-Andhra Pradesh coast and intensify significantly by October 25th. Meanwhile, Cyclone Fengsen crossed the Vietnam coast on October 22nd, while the remnants of a depression are also present in the Taiwan Strait. This could strengthen and intensify the low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal soon.
In view of these maritime events, the Meteorological Department has predicted heavy rainfall in Kerala, Mahi, coastal Karnataka, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Royal Seema, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Konkan, Goa, Central Maharashtra, East Gujarat,
Saurashtra, and Kutch over the next few days. Rainfall has already begun in some areas, and other areas are expected to receive heavy rainfall on October 25th and 26th. Rainfall is very unlikely in the northern states.
