Bhubaneswar. As per the election promise, this time in Chhattisgarh, the government procured paddy from farmers at the rate of Rs. 3100 per quintal, whereas in the upcoming Kharif marketing season, paddy producers of Orissa may also get this price.
In fact, during the recently concluded assembly elections there, the BJP had promised to buy paddy from farmers at the rate of Rs. 3100 per quintal and trusting this,
the farmers contributed a lot in bringing the BJP to power in the state. Now the government is expected to fulfill its promise. If the government procures paddy at the rate of Rs. 3100 per quintal,
then it will put a lot of pressure on the provincial treasury and the difficulties of rice millers and traders will increase.
But if the government procurement price is reduced, then the anger of the farmers against the government may increase.
An attempt has already been made in the case of wheat procurement in Madhya Pradesh where farmers were promised a price of Rs 2700 per quintal but only Rs 2400 per quintal was paid. As a result,
wheat procurement in Madhya Pradesh fell 40 percent short of the target. Orissa is an important rice producer state and contributes a large quantity of rice to the central pool. Kharif rice cultivation is likely to gain momentum there soon.
