Pea prices strong in Canada amid normal trading
21-Nov-2024 06:25 PM
Pea prices in Canada are showing strength this week due to normal trading activity and some buyers securing contracts at higher prices.
As a result, yellow peas are priced at $11 per bushel, while green peas have jumped to $17 per bushel. Maple peas remain stable, ranging from $19 to $23 per bushel. Price variations are influenced by factors such as quality and variety,
giving producers a clearer basis for setting prices and boosting their ability to sell when demand increases. This has allowed farmers to benefit from good income, especially with favorable pea production this year and strong export demand.
The upcoming pea crop in Canada, which will be planted between April and June 2025, will start reaching markets in August 2025.
In the meantime, farmers are preparing for the next planting season and monitoring market conditions. The main importers of Canadian peas are India and China, with significant quantities exported to both countries.
In the two months of August-September 2024, Canada exported 387,000 tonnes of peas to India and 224,000 tonnes to China.
India has a duty-free import window for peas until December 31, 2024, after which the situation could become uncertain, prompting Indian buyers to secure larger contracts before the deadline.
