New Delhi: The Central Government has sanctioned a sum of Rs 14.28 billion to Odisha for the procurement of pulses and oilseeds. Notably, the Odisha government had submitted a proposal to the Centre seeking the allocation of this amount to procure five crops (commodities) from farmers at the Minimum Support Price (MSP). According to a press release issued by the Union Ministry of Agriculture, this proposal submitted by the state government has been accepted.
This substantial financial allocation will ensure the procurement of pulses—such as *Moong* (Green Gram) and *Urad* (Black Gram)—and oilseeds—such as groundnut, sunflower, and mustard—in Odisha.
As per the Ministry of Agriculture's release, a sum of Rs 9.31 billion has been sanctioned for the procurement of 119,387 tonnes of *Urad*, and Rs 3.02 billion for the procurement of 34,492 tonnes of *Moong* in Odisha.
Similarly, regarding oilseed commodities, approximately Rs 1.47 billion has been sanctioned for the procurement of 20,219 tonnes of groundnut; Rs 30.80 crore for 4,964 tonnes of mustard; and Rs 17.06 crore for 2,210 tonnes of sunflower. This initiative will enable farmers to reap the full benefits of the Price Support Scheme, ensuring they are not compelled to sell their produce at distress prices.
The Central Government is placing particular emphasis on boosting sunflower production in Odisha, as this oilseed crop is gradually disappearing from many regions. In several parts of Odisha, however, not only is its cultivation being undertaken on a regular basis, but its yield is also showing signs of improvement.
According to the official release, the procurement of this entire sanctioned quantity of pulses and oilseeds will be carried out within a period of 90 days under the PM-AASHA scheme.
