New Delhi. Earlier, there were reports of fall in cotton sowing area in Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan and Gujarat, whereas now there are reports of its area falling behind last year in Maharashtra and Telangana too.

It is worth noting that Gujarat, Maharashtra, Telangana and Rajasthan are the four most important cotton producing states of the country.

According to the data of the Union Agriculture Ministry, till 26 July, the domestic production area of cotton decreased by about 8 lakh hectares from 113.54 lakh hectares last year to 105.73 lakh hectares.

After that, the data received from the states indicate that the trend of fall in cotton sowing area continued even after that.

Data till July 29 shows that compared to last year, the area under cotton production during the current Kharif season has declined from 26.65 lakh hectares to 23.15 lakh hectares in Gujarat,

from 40.79 lakh hectares to 40.49 lakh hectares in Maharashtra, from 43.04 lakh acres to 40.90 lakh acres in Telangana and from 7.83 lakh hectares to 5.04 lakh hectares in Rajasthan.

Apart from this, there has been a huge decline in the area under cotton cultivation in Haryana and Punjab as well.

The area under cotton cultivation has increased slightly in states like Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, but this will not compensate for the decline in area in other top producing states.

There are also reports of damage to the crop due to heavy rains and floods at some places. In such a situation, a decline in cotton production seems almost certain, due to which its prices can be expected to rise a little in the coming months.
