Brisbane. Sowing of gram has been completed in Australia and during the current season, its highest production is expected after 2016-17. During the 2016-17 season,
gram was sown in 10 lakh hectares of area in Australia and its production increased to a new record level of 20 lakh tonnes. Although the cooperative agency- ABARES has estimated the sowing area of gram to be 7.30 lakh hectares in 2024-25 and its total production to be 11.50 lakh tonnes,
but industry-trade analysts believe that the actual production can reach 15 lakh tonnes while its sowing area has reached 8 lakh hectares. It is worth mentioning that after the year 2016-17, the sowing area and production of gram in Australia kept decreasing due to various reasons.
Reasons included adverse weather, weak market prices and high import duty in India etc. Now India has postponed the import duty till October 2024.
This time the weather and rain conditions in Australia remain quite favorable. This time the weather and rain conditions in Australia remain quite favorable and farmers are confident of better income.
But in some areas, there is also a possibility of threat to the gram crop from insects and diseases. Although there is sufficient amount of moisture in the southern and central parts of Queensland province and the northern part of New South Wales state,
due to which better production of gram is expected, but keeping the crop safe from the possible outbreak of insects and diseases will be a serious challenge for the farmers. Due to better production, Australia can get good success in increasing the export of gram.
