New Delhi. This time, a tremendous increase is being seen in the sowing area of the most important pulse crop of the Kharif season - Arhar (Tuvar) and the government hopes that if the weather and monsoon conditions remain favourable in the coming months,
its total production can increase to 10 lakh tonnes compared to last year. Last year, due to the El Nino weather cycle, there was a decline in the sowing, yield rate and production of tur. The maturity period of tur is long.
According to official data, the production area of tur jumped by 34 percent or about 10 lakh hectares from last year's 28.73 lakh hectares to 38.53 lakh hectares by July 26 this time.
Monsoon rains are also good in the major producing states, due to which there is generally no hindrance in the growth of the crop.
But there is a possibility of partial damage to the crop due to heavy rains and water filling in some low-lying areas.
During the 2023-24 season, the country's production of about 33 lakh tonnes of tur was estimated, while in the current season of 2024-25, the production is estimated to jump to 43-44 lakh tonnes. The government expects this production to increase even further to 45 lakh tonnes.
If this estimate proves to be true, then the supply and availability of this important pulse in the domestic sector will increase and there may be some softening in the prices.
Apart from this, the need for its import from abroad will also be reduced. In India, tur is imported mainly from Myanmar and African countries - Mozambique, Malawi, Sudan, Tanzania and Kenya etc. The condition of the crop there is said to be normal.
