Proposal to amend Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011

New Delhi. The Central Consumer Affairs Department has proposed to amend the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules 2011. Under this, it will be mandatory to declare all kinds of information and details on pre-packaged commodities for the purpose of retail sale.
This amendment will help in bringing clarity and transparency among all manufacturers, packers and importers.
If any quantity of commodity is packed for retail sale or packaged commodities are imported from abroad, then it will become legally mandatory to provide all the information on it.
But this rule is not applicable to packaged commodities sold for industrial customers or institutional buyers.
The Consumer Affairs Department has sought suggestions and views from various concerned parties by July 29, 2024 on the proposed Legal Metrology Amendment.
In fact, keeping in mind the ever-increasing scope of the market, which includes both online and offline platforms, the Department of Consumer Affairs is now considering amending the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Price 2011 to bring uniformity in packaged products.
This amended provision will ensure that these rules will be equally applicable to all types of products sold in bags in retail form and will not be effective only on sale to industrial and institutional buyers.
This provision will not be effective on uniform standards / requirements for packaged products. This provision will help in establishing uniform standards / requirements for packaged products,
which will promote continuity in business and proper uniformity among different brands. In this, branded products of all small and big companies / firms will be considered equal and common consumers will get relief because on the basis of complete information on the packing, he will be able to choose the products (brands) of his choice. 15 days have been given for suggestions.
