Rabi Crop Area in Gujarat Exceeds Last Year's Figures

Gandhinagar. Due to favorable weather conditions and increased farmer activity in the western state of Gujarat, the total area under Rabi crops had improved to 87.52 lakh hectares by December 15th this year, which is 37,000 hectares more than the 37.15 lakh hectares sown during the same period last year. Vigorous sowing of Rabi crops is still underway in the state.

According to the latest weekly report from the Gujarat Agriculture Department, compared to last year, the area under wheat cultivation in the state during the current Rabi season increased from 10.02 lakh hectares to 10.83 lakh hectares,

the area under sorghum improved from 10,000 hectares to 11,000 hectares, the area under maize increased from 1.15 lakh hectares to 1.16 lakh hectares, and the total area under cereal crops increased from 11.41 lakh hectares to 12.23 lakh hectares.

Similarly, thanks to chickpeas, the area under pulses also increased from 7.35 lakh hectares last year to 7.54 lakh hectares.

While the area under chickpeas jumped from 6.72 lakh hectares to 7.10 lakh hectares, the area under other pulses decreased from 63,000 hectares to 44,000 hectares this year.

A similar situation was observed in oilseed crops. Thanks to mustard, the total area under oilseeds increased from 2.42 lakh hectares last year to 2.67 lakh hectares.

Under this, the area under mustard increased from 2.40 lakh hectares to 2.66 lakh hectares, but the area under other oilseeds decreased from 2,000 hectares to 1,000 hectares. In the spice crops category,

the area under cumin cultivation in Gujarat during the current Rabi season has decreased from 376,956 hectares last year to 324,390 hectares, coriander sowing area has fallen from 103,779 hectares to 102,947 hectares,

fennel area has shrunk from 38,369 hectares to 35,506 hectares, and isabgol area has declined from 15,640 hectares to 9,938 hectares.

Furthermore, the area under sugarcane cultivation has also decreased from 142,640 hectares to 113,721 hectares. However, there is increased interest among farmers in cumin cultivation.
