The sowing of Rabi season crops is largely complete as of early January 2025, with total area under Rabi crops rising to 622.76 lakh hectares.
This marks an increase of 1.24 lakh hectares compared to the same period last year (621.52 lakh hectares). Among these crops, wheat—India's most important Rabi grain—has seen little change in its sowing area,
indicating that the sowing process is nearly finished. As of January 3, 2025, the wheat cultivation area stands at 319.74 lakh hectares, slightly above last year.
The government aims for a wheat production target of 1150 lakh tonnes, which is considered a record. However, achieving this target depends heavily on favorable weather conditions over the next few months.
The Indian Meteorological Department has predicted that rainfall during the January-March 2025 period could be below normal, although temperatures in January are expected to be higher than usual with slightly more rainfall.
If temperatures remain high and rainfall is inadequate during February and March, the wheat crop may face risks, especially in areas like Punjab, where the crop is already experiencing disease and insect infestations.
In summary, while the Rabi season sowing is mostly complete, the coming weather conditions will be critical for ensuring optimal yields, especially for wheat.
