Rabi Crop Sowing Area Increases by 81,000 Hectares in Gujarat

Gandhinagar. The area under Rabi crops in Gujarat, the western state of India, which was initially lagging behind last year's figures, has now surpassed them. According to the latest data from the State Agriculture Department,
the total area under Rabi crops in Gujarat has increased to 49.17 lakh hectares as of January 19, 2026, which is 81,000 hectares more than the 48.36 lakh hectares sown during the same period last year. While the area under major Rabi crops – wheat, pulses, maize, and mustard – has increased, and the sugarcane area has also improved from 1.79 lakh hectares to 1.81 lakh hectares, the area under spice crops has declined.
According to the Agriculture Department data, compared to last year, the area under wheat in Gujarat during the current Rabi season has increased from 13.68 lakh hectares to 14.74 lakh hectares, maize from 1.35 lakh hectares to 1.45 lakh hectares, jowar from 13,000 hectares to 16,000 hectares, and the total area under cereal crops has increased from 15.33 lakh hectares to 16.49 lakh hectares.
Similarly, the area under pulse crops has increased from 9.20 lakh hectares to 9.66 lakh hectares, and the area under oilseed crops has improved from 2.60 lakh hectares to 2.85 lakh hectares.
Among pulse crops, the area under gram has jumped from 8.48 lakh hectares to 9.12 lakh hectares, and among oilseed crops, the area under mustard has increased from 2.58 lakh hectares to 2.84 lakh hectares.
However, the sowing area for spice crops has lagged behind last year's figures. According to official figures, compared to last year, the area under cumin cultivation in Gujarat during the current Rabi season has decreased from 476,481 hectares to 407,542 hectares,
coriander from 130,731 hectares to 125,881 hectares, fennel from 57,188 hectares to 48,913 hectares, and isabgol from 27,488 hectares to 17,278 hectares. Sowing of Rabi crops in the state is almost complete.
