After a long wait, winter has finally arrived in northwestern India, and it's nothing short of a blessing. It has given a new lease of life to the Rabi crops and has also relieved farmers of irrigation expenses. This rainfall was desperately needed.
Significantly, heavy rains lashed Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Delhi, and Chandigarh on January 22-23, raising hopes for a better yield of Rabi crops.
This region is considered the largest producer of wheat, barley, and mustard in the country, while chickpeas are also grown extensively. Uttar Pradesh is a major producer of peas and lentils. The state ranks first in pea production and second in lentil production.
It also produces the most wheat, while Rajasthan is the leading producer of mustard and barley, and also produces a significant amount of chickpeas and wheat. As for Punjab, it is the largest contributor of wheat to the central pool.
Haryana also has extensive government-supported wheat cultivation. Haryana also produces a considerable amount of mustard. This rainfall will provide significant relief to various Rabi crops in all the aforementioned states.
The weather is cool, and temperatures are low. This will likely help retain moisture in the soil for a longer period.
The Meteorological Department has also predicted rain in Uttar Pradesh and other neighboring states on January 24.
The sowing of Rabi crops has been completed, and favorable weather conditions are essential for their uninterrupted growth and a bumper harvest. So far, the weather has remained favorable. Dense fog and mist were observed in some areas, but their duration was short.
Now, with the help of the rain, the crops will be able to develop better. At the national level, there has been a good increase in the area sown with wheat, maize, chickpeas, lentils, and mustard, and expectations for a bumper crop have increased.
