Brisbane. Due to good rains in major pulse producing areas of Australia last week, the moisture content in the soil of the fields increased and the crops got a lot of relief. The areas which received good rains include the southern part of New South Wales,
Victoria and South Australia provinces where gram, lentil and pea are cultivated on a large scale. During the week ending on 31st July, 5 to 25 mm of rain was recorded in these producing areas.
Government organisation-ABARES has expressed 40 to 60 percent possibility of more rainfall than the normal average in Australia,
due to which the crops will continue to progress well and sufficient moisture content will be available in the soil of the fields for the third largest production of pulse crops till date.
It is known that Australia is the world's largest exporter of Desi gram and the second largest exporter of lentil.
Apart from this, pulses like peas, faba beans and lupin are also exported well from there. ABARES has estimated the production of 11.50 lakh tonnes of gram and 16 lakh tonnes of lentils this time, while in view of the increase in sowing area and favorable weather and rain conditions,
industry and trade analysts believe that the actual production may be more than the estimate of ABARES. Till now, India was importing lentils from Canada in large quantities,
while now the import of Desi gram has also started on a large scale because the government has postponed the heavy customs duty of 66 percent imposed on it till 31 October 2024.
Sowing of pulses crops has been completed in Australia and its harvesting preparations will start from October. There, the gram and lentil crops are said to be in very good condition.
