New Delhi. The Union Agriculture Minister has approved the proposal to procure pulses and oilseeds in Rajasthan and Andhra Pradesh under the Price Support Scheme.
Under this scheme, the purchase of 37,273 tons of peanuts at the Minimum Support Price (MSP) in Andhra Pradesh has been approved, with an estimated expenditure of ₹270.71 crore.
The state is expected to produce 1.49 lakh tons of peanuts during this Kharif season. Additionally, approval has been granted for the purchase of approximately 98,000 tons of onions in Andhra Pradesh under the Market Intervention Scheme (MIS), valued at ₹24.47 crore.
As for Rajasthan, approval has been granted for the purchase of mung beans, black gram, soybeans, and peanuts under the Price Support Scheme (PSS).
Under this scheme, government procurement of 305,750 tons of mung beans, 1.68 lakh tons (100%) of black gram, 554,750 tons of groundnuts, and 265,750 tons of soybeans has been approved in the state.
If the entire approved quantity of these crops is procured at the minimum support price, the total expenditure will be ₹9,436 crore. This will benefit producers in both states.
It is noteworthy that Rajasthan is the leading producer of mung beans during the Kharif season, while it ranks second in peanut production and third in soybean production.
The central government has already pledged to procure 100% of the production of pigeon pea, black gram, and lentils. Rajasthan has negligible production of pigeon pea, and harvesting has not yet begun.
Lentil is a Rabi season pulse crop, the sowing of which is currently underway. In any case, lentil production in Rajasthan is very low or negligible.
In Rajasthan, the harvesting of Kharif crop of soybean and groundnut has already started and due to the wholesale market price being much below the government support price, the farmers were forced to sell their produce at throwaway prices.
