Reservoir Levels Fall for Sixth Straight Week

New Delhi: Due to little to no rainfall in most parts of the country, the water stock in 166 major dams and reservoirs has fallen for the sixth consecutive week, dropping below 85 percent of their total storage capacity.

The latest data from the Central Water Commission shows that these 166 dams and reservoirs currently hold 151.452 billion cubic meters (BCM) of water, which is 82.51 percent of their total storage capacity of 183.565 BCM.

The water levels in the dams are continuously decreasing. Despite the active La Niña weather pattern, the country is not receiving sufficient rainfall.

However, the current water level in the dams and reservoirs is 7 percent higher than last year and 22 percent higher than the ten-year average.

In North India, the cooler weather means that despite the lack of rain, there is no immediate serious threat to the Rabi crops, and the soil still retains some moisture.

According to the Meteorological Department, although only 20 percent of the country's 730 districts experienced a rainfall deficit between October 1 and December 18, 2025, after the southwest monsoon season,

there was no rainfall in other parts of the country last week, except for some areas in states like Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Andhra Pradesh, and parts of the northeastern states. Further rainfall may be needed.
