Roadmap Set for Sugar and Bioenergy Sector

New Delhi. The Indian Sugar and Bio-energy Manufacturers Association (ISMA), the apex body of the sugar industry, charted a roadmap for the future of the sugar and bioenergy sector at its annual general meeting.

At this annual meeting, held in New Delhi, ISMA reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with the Government of India and collaborating with all stakeholders to strengthen long-term and sustainable competitiveness and to develop and expand the Indian sugar and bioenergy sector.

The ISMA annual general meeting, held on December 18, 2025, was attended by the Union Minister for Food, Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution, Power and Renewable Energy, and the Secretary of the Department of Food and Public Distribution.

ISMA emphasized the need for continuous and active engagement with policymakers to address current market challenges and prepare the industry for future opportunities.

Sugar mills were advised to focus on energy production and prioritize technological upgrades, as new and advanced technologies offer the potential for cost reduction.

ISMA stressed the importance of ensuring economic viability in the sugar industry to facilitate timely payments to sugarcane farmers.

It urged the government to increase the minimum ex-factory selling price of sugar accordingly. The need to strengthen the ethanol ecosystem was also highlighted.
