Significant Decline in Groundnut Production Expected in Gujarat

Mumbai. Groundnut production in Gujarat during this year’s Kharif season is expected to decline significantly, driven by a reduction in the area sown and a drop in average yield due to adverse weather conditions. It is worth noting that Gujarat is the leading groundnut-producing state in the country.

A field survey conducted by the Solvent Extractors' Association of India (SEA)—a prominent organization representing the domestic oilseed and vegetable oil industry—across key groundnut-producing districts in Gujarat indicates that production is likely to fall in most areas.

According to the SEA survey report, the area sown with groundnuts in Gujarat during the 2026 Kharif season has decreased to 20.71 lakh hectares, down from 22.02 lakh hectares in 2025. Furthermore, the average crop yield is expected to decline from 1,902 kg per hectare to 1,608 kg per hectare. Based on these figures, the association estimates that total groundnut production in Gujarat will drop to 33.34 lakh tonnes, compared to 41.88 lakh tonnes last year.

The survey report projects that in the state’s major producing districts—Amreli, Bhavnagar, Jamnagar, Dwarka, Junagadh, Gir Somnath, Porbandar, Rajkot, Morbi, and Surendranagar—groundnut production will fall from 31.82 lakh tonnes to 25.53 lakh tonnes.

Similarly, in districts such as Kutch, Sabarkantha, Aravalli, and Banaskantha, production is expected to decline from 10.06 lakh tonnes to 7.81 lakh tonnes. Harvesting of the new crop has begun. Several districts in Gujarat received less than the normal average rainfall during the monsoon season.
