Brasilia. Latin American country- Brazil has now estimated the production of 150 million tonnes of soybean in the 2023-24 marketing season, which is 2 percent less than the previous estimate. In fact, the soybean crop suffered a lot due to the severe and devastating floods in the Rio Grande do Sul province of southern Brazil during the month of April.
Earlier, soybean crops were also damaged due to heavy rains and floods in Mato Grosso, Parana, Sao Paulo and Mato Grosso do Sul provinces. It is noteworthy that Brazil is the largest producer and exporter of soybean in the world.
The three most prominent soybean producing states there include Mato Grosso, Parana and Rio Grande do Sul. The flood in Rio Grande do Sul province was so severe that 180 people died and about 24 lakh people were badly affected.
Flood water remained in the fields for several weeks, due to which the standing soybean crop was destroyed. However, in Rio Grande do Sul, about 70-75 percent of soybean crop harvesting was completed before the floods,
so the damage was less. According to CONAB, an agency subordinate to the Brazilian government, the domestic soybean production area in the 2023-24 season was 460 lakh hectares,
while the US Department of Agriculture (USDA)'s Foreign Agricultural Service's Brazil-based representative office (attachee or USDA post) has estimated the sowing area of soybean there to be 458 lakh hectares (1132 lakh acres).
According to a leading consultancy firm, soybean cultivation in Brazil is 464 lakh hectares. Now for the 2024-25 season,
soybean sowing will start in Brazil from September and harvesting will start in February next year. Soybean, soy oil and soymeal are being regularly exported from Brazil.
