Sugar Output Rises 1.72 Million Tonnes by Mid-December

New Delhi: Sugarcane crushing and sugar production are in full swing in all major producing states of the country. According to the latest figures from the National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories, the apex body of cooperative sugar mills,
national production increased to 7.79 million tonnes during the first two and a half months of the current marketing season, i.e., from October 1 to December 15, 2025. This is 1.72 million tonnes or 28.34 percent higher than the production of 6.07 million tonnes during the same period last year (2024).
According to the Federation's report, during the period under review, sugar production increased from 2.295 million tonnes to 2.505 million tonnes in Uttar Pradesh, from 1.68 million tonnes to 3.13 million tonnes in Maharashtra, and from 1.35 million tonnes to 1.55 million tonnes in Karnataka.
Thus, the contribution of these three top producing states to the total domestic sugar production increased from 87.73 percent to 92.23 percent during the period under review.
According to the Federation, during the period from October 1 to December 15, 2025, 185,000 tonnes of sugar were produced in Gujarat,
15,000 tonnes in Andhra Pradesh, 90,000 tonnes in Bihar, 30,000 tonnes in Haryana, 50,000 tonnes in Madhya Pradesh, 20,000 tonnes in Punjab, 55,000 tonnes in Tamil Nadu, 50,000 tonnes in Telangana, 90,000 tonnes in Uttarakhand, and 20,000 tonnes in other states of the country.
Nationally, by mid-September 2025, a total of 90.127 million tonnes of sugarcane were crushed in 479 mills, resulting in the production of 7.79 million tonnes of sugar with an average recovery rate of 8.64 percent.
In comparison, during the same period in 2024, 717.52 lakh tonnes of sugarcane were crushed in 473 units, resulting in a total production of 60.70 lakh tonnes of sugar with an average recovery rate of 8.46 percent.
