New Delhi. The new marketing season for sugarcane crushing and sugar production officially began on October 1, 2025, and will continue until September 30, 2026.
The apex industry body, the Indian Sugar and Bio-Energy Manufacturers Association (ISMA), has released its first sugar production estimate for the 2025-26 season.
According to ISMA's report, at the beginning of the current marketing season, i.e., October 1, 2025, the domestic industry had a carryover stock of approximately 5 million tons of sugar, while the country's gross sugar production during the current season is expected to be 34.35 million tons.
Of this, 3.4 million tons will be used for ethanol production, while the remaining 30.95 million tons will be available for food purposes.
ISMA estimates that domestic consumption of approximately 28.5 million tonnes of sugar will occur during the entire 2025-26 marketing season (October-September), leaving the industry with a surplus stock of 7.45 million tonnes at the end of the season.
According to ISMA, with a carryover stock of 5 million tonnes and production of 30.95 million tonnes, the total sugar availability for the 2025-26 season will reach 35.95 million tonnes.
Given the availability of stocks, the government is being requested to allow the export of 2 million tonnes of sugar to assist sugar millers in making timely payments to sugarcane farmers.
