New Delhi. Although there has been a significant increase in sugarcane acreage this year compared to last year, doubts are being raised about the potential for significant improvement in its average yield and sugar recovery rate.
Millers in Maharashtra say that floods in many areas and prolonged waterlogging in fields have damaged the sugarcane crop.
The crop situation in Karnataka is reported to be relatively better. While there has been a significant increase in sugarcane acreage in these two states, the acreage has decreased in Uttar Pradesh,
which is the leading sugarcane producer. States like Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Bihar, Punjab, Haryana, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttarakhand have also seen some changes in sugarcane acreage.
According to the latest data from the Union Agriculture Ministry, the area under sugarcane production at the national level during the current year till October 3 has increased to 59.07 lakh hectares, which is 1.86 lakh hectares more than the sowing area of 57.22 lakh hectares in the same period last year and about 6.50 lakh hectares more than the five-
year average area of 52.51 lakh hectares. Had the crop not been damaged by natural calamities, the production could have been excellent.
ISMA has made a preliminary estimate of gross sugar production of 349 lakh tonnes in the current marketing season (October-September) of 2025-26, which is about 18 percent more than the production of the 2025-26 season.
