Super El Niño Raises Fears of Global Weather Disruptions

New Delhi. Weather experts and forecasting centers state that the rate at which sea-surface temperatures in the equatorial Pacific Ocean are rising is unprecedented. This is a clear indication of an impending "Super El Niño," the effects of which could push weather conditions to extremes across various parts of the globe.

This implies that regions prone to dry weather and low rainfall could face severe and devastating drought crises. Conversely, areas expecting rain could experience torrential downpours and catastrophic flooding. Both scenarios would prove detrimental to agricultural production, potentially plunging many nations into a serious food crisis.

According to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), these extremes—ranging from severe droughts to massive floods—could result not only in significant loss of life and property but also in severe damage to crop yields.

As surface temperatures in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific are rising to exceptionally high levels, this El Niño event could be prolonged. Temperatures in key monitoring zones could remain 2 degrees Celsius above the El Niño baseline.
