Mumbai. The Cereals and Other Produce Regulatory Authority (COPRA) of the African country Tanzania wants to secure a fixed, regular, and sustainable market for its Tur crop in India so that Tanzanian farmers and traders/exporters do not face any difficulties in continuously selling their produce.

The Director General of COPRA stated that Tanzania is expected to produce over 400,000 tons of Tur during the current year, so the government has intensified efforts to secure a stable export market for Tur in India.

Since India is its largest consumer, Tanzania expects to be successful in exporting large quantities of Tur to India. The export offer price for its product also remains competitive.

Recently, a Tanzanian delegation led by the Director General of COPRA visited India and held extensive discussions with the Secretary of the Union Department of Consumer Affairs in India. In this regard, Tanzania placed special emphasis on strengthening the export program and ensuring its smooth implementation.

The Tanzanian government's strategy is to increase agricultural income and ensure price stability for local farmers. The Tanzanian government fears that if Indian importers do not show sufficient interest and activity in purchasing pigeon pea, the domestic market for this important pulse will slow down and prices will fall further.

Prices have already fallen significantly. If farmers do not receive profitable returns, their enthusiasm and attraction for pigeon pea cultivation in the next season will diminish.

According to the Director General of Copra, Tanzania is currently the second largest producer of pigeon pea in the world after India.

During the last marketing season, Tanzania alone exported a substantial 350,000 tons of pigeon pea to India, but this time Indian demand is somewhat weak.
