Hyderabad: In Telangana—South India's leading rice-producing state—a target has been set for the government procurement of 90 lakh tonnes of paddy during the current Rabi marketing season; of this, over 10 lakh tonnes have already been procured. This includes 4.50 lakh tonnes of fine-quality or 'A' grade paddy, while the remaining quantity comprises general (coarse) paddy.

The state of Telangana currently faces a challenge regarding the safe storage of approximately 32 lakh tonnes of paddy. The paddy procurement season formally commenced on April 1, 2026.

According to official sources, the pace of paddy procurement is favorable for achieving the overall set target. The state government has released a sum of ₹500.20 crore to make payments to farmers for the paddy procured at the Minimum Support Price (MSP). In this southern state, paddy cultivation covers an area of 22.25 lakh hectares, and production is expected to rise to reach 152 lakh tonnes.

The 90-lakh-tonne procurement target set by the government comprises 30 lakh tonnes of fine-quality paddy and 60 lakh tonnes of general-category paddy. To facilitate this procurement, 8,575 purchasing centers have been opened across the state, and timely lifting of the procured paddy stocks is being ensured to prevent any inconvenience to farmers as they bring in and sell their fresh produce.
