Tur (Pigeon Pea) Imports Surge by 44% in Eight Months

Mumbai: Anticipating a decline in production due to severe drought in the top two producing states—Maharashtra and Karnataka—Indian importers are aggressively increasing their imports of *tur* (pigeon pea) from abroad.

According to the India Pulses and Grains Association (IPGA), a leading trade body, *tur* imports into the country reached 6.25 lakh tonnes during the first eight months of the current year (January–August 2026)—a 44% increase compared to the 4.34 lakh tonnes imported during the same period last year. However, demand and prices for *tur* have shown some weakness over the past two weeks.

Data compiled by the association indicates that during the first eight months of this year, India imported 1.53 lakh tonnes from Myanmar, 2.29 lakh tonnes from Mozambique (the largest source), 1.10 lakh tonnes from Tanzania, 72,000 tonnes from Sudan, and 61,000 tonnes from other countries. Meanwhile, domestic market prices have begun to soften. There is a strong inflow of new *tur* stock from African nations.

Over the last two consecutive weeks, prices for both domestic and imported *tur* have declined. Export offer prices from key supplier nations—particularly Myanmar—have fallen. The Indian rupee has strengthened slightly, while demand has weakened. Furthermore, there is a noticeable economic tightness in the market. The arrival of the domestic harvest is also still some time away.
