Tur (Pigeon Pea) Procurement Likely to Cross 5 Lakh Tonnes
★ In the fiscal year 2024–25, the government may procure over 5 lakh tonnes of tur, which would be the highest level since the financial year 2020.
★ So far, procurement has reached 4.7 lakh tonnes.
★ Currently, procurement is only happening in Maharashtra; it has stopped in other states.
★ Prices in many mandis are significantly below the MSP (Minimum Support Price).
★ In recent months, retail prices have dropped—from Rs. 160/kg in February 2025 to Rs. 120/kg at the start of May.
★ According to the Agriculture Ministry, tur production is estimated at 35.1 lakh tonnes for 2024–25, slightly higher than last year.
★ However, trade estimates are even higher than the official estimate.
★ In upcoming advance production estimates, the figures may increase further.
★ Although the buffer stock of tur is much lower than the standard 10 lakh tonnes, it is higher than in previous years.
★ With higher production and rising imports, availability is currently good.
★ After summer, demand is expected to rise, and the government will also begin selling from its stock, which may put pressure on prices from time to time.
★ Avoid bullish trades in tur for now.
