Hyderabad. Although many parts of Telangana received good southwest monsoon rains during the initial phase, which helped farmers a lot in sowing Kharif crops, but many areas of the state received less or very less rainfall and farmers there are eagerly waiting for good rains for crop cultivation.
The interesting fact is that technically Telangana has received surplus rainfall so far during the current monsoon season, but rain-dependent crops in more than half of the rural mandals are facing lack of moisture as there has been no good rain.
Germination has decreased among some crops, while in many areas the cotton crop is in danger. Telangana has 585 rural mandals, in more than 50 percent of which the condition of rain-dependent crops has started deteriorating. Cotton is mainly included in this.
It is known that Telangana is the third largest producer of cotton in the country. There, 76 divisions have received much less rainfall (20 to 59 percent) than the normal average.
In one division, rainfall deficit is being seen to be more than 60 percent, while there are 236 divisions where rainfall has been 19 percent less to 19 percent more than the normal average.
According to official figures, this time so far, Kharif crops have been sown in about 50 lakh acres in Telangana, which includes cotton in 35 lakh acres, soybean in 2.60 lakh acres, pigeon pea (tuvar) in 2.40 lakh acres, maize in 2 lakh acres, paddy in 1.75 lakh acres and moong cultivation in 40 thousand acres.
Last year, till July 7, the production area of Kharif crops in the state was less than 40 lakh acres. This time, cotton acreage has increased in some other districts of Telangana including Adilabad, Khammam, Bhim-Asifabad, Sangareddy, Nalgonda, Narayanpet, Vikarabad, Nagarkurnool, Bhadradri, Kodhagudem, Warangal and Nirmal.
