US Clarifies: Pulses Not Included in Trade Deal
★The United States has revised its fact sheet on the interim trade agreement with India, removing any reference to pulses. In the earlier version, pulses were listed among the American agricultural products on which India was expected to reduce or eliminate tariffs.
★Previously, the US had stated that India would lower or remove duties on products such as DDGS, red sorghum, tree nuts, fresh and processed fruits, selected pulses, and soybean oil. In the updated fact sheet, pulses are no longer mentioned, although other agricultural commodities remain on the list.
★The removal of pulses has brought relief to the domestic industry. India primarily imports pulses from Canada, Russia, and Australia, while the US accounts for a relatively small share of India’s total pulse imports. However, there were concerns that Canadian lentils could potentially enter India indirectly via the US under preferential terms.
★Negotiations between the two countries will continue on the remaining tariff and non-tariff barriers, as well as digital trade rules.
